Queer Migration, War and Crisis

Show notes

Queer migration studies have highlighted the unique vulnerabilities and protection gaps confronting queer refugees, asylum-seekers, and undocumented people. LGBTQI+ individuals who flee war and violence due to their sexual and/or gender identities face additional trauma and stress. By taking the recent case of the Russian war in Ukraine as a starting point, the panel will discuss the state-level and grassroots responses to accommodate the needs and vulnerabilities of queer refugees in Europe. The panel will critically engage with the dominant discourses on queer refugee lives and their role in sustaining the systems of exclusion and marginalization.

This recording is from the conference titled "Navigating the Changing Times of Gender, Sexuality, and Migration in Europe,” organized in June 2023 in Berlin with the collaboration of the Humboldt University of Berlin and Heinrich Böll Foundation.

Panelists: Camille Ogoti, Fadi Saleh, Irene Kuzemko, Konstantin Sherstyuk

Moderation: Inga Kravchik
